Anyone in the UK, and many people abroad , will know OF Windsor Castle - and some will know of Windsor Great Park - because of their Royal and historical associations. Thousands of visitors will go to Windsor this Bank Holiday weekend, many day-trippers from London. Little you know of in advance can prepare you for the size and impact of the arrangement - truly on a landscape scale. The directness of the "Great Walk" from the centre of the Great park emphasises the power of the castle - which forms a barrier to the westward expansion of urban sprawl of London and its satellite commuter towns. But if we got rid of the monarchy, what would we do with this?

Quite different but no-less impressive from the Thames - the way most monarchs would have visited in the past
