Booth Poverty Maps Now on Mobile Phones

Booth's London Poverty Map

Booth's Poverty Maps have long been a resource for anyone interested in local history, historical geography,  and urban landscapes.

I have long dipped into - and used the LSE's excelent website http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=view_booth_and_barth&args=531000,180400,6,large,5

But now - a very handy version has been made fopr mobile phones - so you can check on an area when you visit it http://phone.booth.lse.ac.uk/   . This has advantages anyway of an easy to use "slider" to fade from historic map to modern...

...from which I learnt that my 19th-c neighbours were "Poor 18s to 21s for a moderate family" - According to the National Archives currency converter 21s = £62.88 pw today.  http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency/default2.asp
